Newcomer Literacy Initiative (NLI)

The Newcomer Literacy Initiative consists of EAL classes with childminding services that run from September to June. These classes are offered Monday to Friday from 9:00 am – 11:30 am and 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm. Volunteer recruitment for the 2009/2010 school year is now closed.

All NLI volunteers must complete and pass a Criminal Record Check and Manitoba Child Abuse Registry Check.

NLI volunteers will work with students under the direction of the NLI Teacher in one-on one, small group, and whole class settings.

NLI Volunteers are expected to:

Model proper English at all times, making an effort to speak clearly and slowly
Use polite language and social etiquette
Be patient with students
Support students in their learning NOT provide them with the answers
